Oracle JD Edwards Roadmap: What Does Release 27 Mean for Your Environment?
Oracle recently announced a series of significant changes to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. Although many of these developments are at the technical and infrastructure levels, they could very well influence your platform choices, upgrade planning, and management strategy in the coming years.
For us, the direction this is taking is particularly interesting. Oracle is moving JD Edwards further toward a standardized, modern technical foundation, with 64-bit as the standard, Oracle WebLogic as the web server, and One-Click Provisioning as the primary deployment method.
That doesn't mean you have to change your entire environment right away today. It does mean, however, that it's wise to take stock of where you stand now and identify which parts of your environment might be affected.
In this article, we outline the most important changes and explain what they might mean in practice for your JD Edwards roadmap.
In a nutshell
- Starting with Release 27 (9.2.27.x), Oracle WebLogic is the only supported web server. IBM WebSphere will transition to Sustaining Support.
- IBM AIX, Oracle Solaris, and IBM DB2 LUW will also transition to Sustaining Support starting with Release 27.
- Kubernetes and Docker containers are also supported starting with Release 27. Oracle SOA Suite and Oracle Enterprise Manager have been supported since Release 26, and HP-UX since Release 25.
- Java 8 is moving to Sustaining Support. Java 21 will be the supported Java version.
- Starting January 1, 2027, Oracle will only provide new Application ESUs in 64-bit, and the Platform Pack installers will be discontinued.
- Starting January 1, 2028, application updates will be available exclusively as Web PAR.
- Premier Support for JD Edwards will continue through at least 2037.
- Oracle is presenting these changes as proposed plans. Dates and details are subject to change and will be communicated through official Oracle announcements.

A clear direction: more standardization and less legacy systems
When we compare the various announcements side by side, one clear trend stands out: JD Edwards is undergoing further technical standardization and modernization.
Various platforms and technology products are transitioning to Sustaining Support, but not all at the same time. IBM WebSphere, IBM AIX, Oracle Solaris, IBM DB2 LUW, and Kubernetes and Docker containers will follow starting with Release 27. Oracle SOA Suite and Oracle Enterprise Manager have already made this transition with Release 26, while HP-UX has no longer been fully supported since Release 25. No new features or enhancements are planned for Sustaining Support; support focuses primarily on critical issues, security updates, and software bugs.
Starting with Release 27, the supported platform portfolio will therefore be further streamlined. Oracle WebLogic remains as the web server, while the supported operating system and database portfolio will also be consolidated.
Our take on this? This isn't a reason to replace everything right away. However, it is a clear signal not to carry legacy dependencies over to your next upgrade.
If you’re running on one of the operating systems or databases mentioned, this also raises a broader platform question: Which operating system and which database are best suited for your future JD Edwards environment? And where will you run them—on-premises or in the cloud?
For WebSphere, Oracle WebLogic is the only supported alternative. The situation is different for the underlying platform, where several options are available. We’re happy to help you explore your options regarding the operating system, database, and infrastructure. In practice, we often see organizations combine such projects with a JD Edwards upgrade or an implementation of the latest release, such as Release 27.
The End of 32-bit Application ESUs
One of the most significant changes concerns the way Oracle makes Application ESUs available.
Through December 31, 2026, Application ESUs will continue to be delivered in both 32-bit and 64-bit formats. Starting January 1, 2027, new Application ESUs will be delivered only as 64-bit EXE and Web PAR files. From that point on, a 32-bit Deployment Server will no longer be able to deploy new Application ESUs.
Starting January 1, 2028, the next step will be taken: new application updates will be delivered exclusively as Web PARs. This requires a 64-bit EnterpriseOne environment and Tools Release 9.2.7.0 or higher.
What does this mean in practice?
If your environment still contains any 32-bit components, this is something you should start identifying now.
For example:
- Deployment Servers
- Enterprise Servers
- Development Clients
- CNC Deployment Procedures
- Tools Release Level
- Dependencies in Your Current IT Infrastructure
In our experience, it is precisely these technical dependencies that come into play during an upgrade can lead to unexpected issues. By identifying them in advance, you can factor them into your planning rather than having to resolve them during the project.
Does your organization use IBM WebSphere?
If so, this is one of the changes you'll definitely want to include in your roadmap. For Release 26 and earlier, both Oracle WebLogic Server and IBM WebSphere Application Server are supported. Starting with Release 27, Oracle WebLogic will be the supported web server.
For organizations that use WebSphere, this means that a migration to WebLogic must be included in future technical planning.
Our experience? A WebSphere migration is technically manageable, but you shouldn’t treat it as a standalone project. It makes more sense to align the migration with your broader JD Edwards upgrade and infrastructure strategy.
Please also keep licensing in mind: depending on your current licensing agreements, switching to WebLogic may have implications. We can help you determine whether additional licenses are required in your situation.
Java 8 is being phased out; Java 21 will become the standard
A change that’s easy to overlook, but is actually crucial for many environments: Starting with Release 27, Java 8 will transition to Sustaining Support, and Java 21 will become the supported Java version.
Our tip: Don’t underestimate this change. The transition from Java 8 to Java 21 may affect custom code, integrations, tooling, and other components of your IT landscape. Therefore, be sure to explicitly assess this impact as part of your upgrade preparation.
One-Click Provisioning Is Becoming More Important
JD Edwards is also moving further toward standardization in the area of deployment.
Effective January 1, 2027, Oracle will no longer provide Platform Pack installer media through its software delivery channels. For Release 27 and later, Oracle recommends using One-Click Provisioning to install and upgrade JD Edwards environments.
This means a change in the way some organizations set up and manage their environments.
We expect this to primarily involve a change in working methods. Anyone who still relies heavily on traditional installation and deployment procedures today would be wise to incorporate One-Click Provisioning into their technical roadmap in a timely manner and build up the necessary expertise within their team. Oracle itself explicitly mentions this as an action item.
Release 27 will be a major turning point
Several changes are coming together with Release 27.
In addition to the platform changes mentioned earlier, the Data Access Server (DAS) will be phased out starting with Release 27. Oracle recommends switching to the Data Access Driver (DAD) for read-only data requirements.
The management of targets via Server Manager is also changing. Starting with Release 27, backward compatibility for older releases will be discontinued. From that point on, Server Manager will support Release 27 and later.
As far as we're concerned, that doesn't mean every organization has to move to Release 27 right away. It mainly means that Release 27 should be part of your roadmap.
If you know which technologies you're using, what dependencies exist, and when your next upgrade is scheduled, you can assess the impact of these changes in a timely manner and make the right choices for the future of your JD Edwards environment.
Older upgrade paths are also changing
A change that is particularly relevant for organizations with an older JD Edwards installation: Oracle plans to discontinue support for direct upgrades from JD Edwards OneWorld Xe to EnterpriseOne 9.2 starting with Release 27.
Oracle will no longer provide the necessary media, documentation, or technical support for this direct upgrade path. The recommended approach is to first upgrade to a secondary application release (9.0.2 or 9.1) and then use One-Click Provisioning for the subsequent upgrade to 9.2.
For organizations still running on such an outdated environment, this is more than just a technical footnote. It underscores why it is wise not to indefinitely postpone upgrade plans when your environment still relies on releases and platforms that Oracle no longer supports or certifies.
Six Questions to Assess the Impact on Your Organization
1. Are we ready for 64-bit?
2. Do we use IBM WebSphere?
In that case, it's a good idea to define a migration path to Oracle WebLogic.
3. Are we ready for One-Click Provisioning?
If your current deployment processes are still based on Platform Pack installers, now is a good time to gain knowledge and experience with One-Click.
4. Are we using technology that is geared toward Sustaining Support?
Determine whether you rely on IBM AIX, Oracle Solaris, IBM DB2 LUW, WebSphere, Kubernetes or Docker containers, Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle Enterprise Manager, or HP-UX. Keep the timing in mind: some of these technologies will have a different support status starting with Release 25 or 26.
5. Are we ready for Java 21?
Identify which custom Java business functions, integrations, and tools you use. A Java upgrade often affects more than just the servers.
6. What does Release 27 mean for our roadmap?
Don't just consider when you want to upgrade, but above all, consider which technical decisions and dependencies you need to take into account.
What does this mean for your JD Edwards environment?
The recent announcements primarily provide direction. JD Edwards is continuing to move toward a standardized technical foundation with less reliance on legacy technology.
You don't have to implement every change right away. You do want to know whether your current environment aligns with the direction in which the platform is evolving.
That's why now is a good time to take stock of your situation:
- Which parts of your platform are affected?
- Are you still using technology that falls under the category of Sustaining Support?
- Are you ready for 64-bit and Web PAR?
- What does the move to Java 21 mean for your custom code and integrations?
- What does the switch to WebLogic mean for your environment?
- What role will One-Click Provisioning play?
- And how does this fit into your next JD Edwards upgrade?
Oracle itself recommends assessing the impact on the current platform, technology usage, and JDE release levels, and developing plans for supported platforms and technologies. Oracle also mentions gaining experience with One-Click Provisioning as a specific action item.
One thing to keep in mind: Oracle confirms that Premier Support for JD Edwards will be available through at least 2037, with a rolling ten-year window. So the plan is not for JD Edwards to be phased out, but for the platform to continue on a more streamlined and modern technical foundation.
Our conclusion: Don’t wait for Release 27 to answer these questions. Those who gain insight into their own environment now will have better control over the roadmap later on and prevent technical changes from only becoming apparent during an upgrade project. Moreover, JD Edwards continues to evolve rapidly.
